University Park Obstetrics and Gynecology Blog

Many things can cause UTIs, and some of them can be pretty surprising.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are downright awful. It burns when you urinate, your back and lower abdomen ache, you have to go but you just can’t, your urine is smelly and you feel feverish and tired — these are all common symptoms of a UTI, and no woman wants to experience one. However, it’s not always obvious what can cause a UTI, and here at University Park Obstetrics and Gynecology, we have set out to identify some of the most surprising causes of UTIs.

#1. You don’t drink enough water.

There are so many reasons to make sure that you’re always drinking enough water every day, but the fact that not drinking enough can lead UTIs, is probably one of the most compelling reasons. How does not drinking enough water lead to UTIs? Because water helps to flush out the bacteria in the urethra that causes UTIs.

#2. You hold it for too long.

There are times in everyone’s life when you can’t get to the bathroom when you need to, but it’s in your best interest to make sure those times are few and far between. Whenever possible, you should always get to the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge to go. When you hold in your urine, germs in the urine multiply, and the longer you hold it, the more they multiply. This puts you at a high risk for getting a UTI.

#3. You use unlubricated condoms.

If you choose to condoms to prevent pregnancy and STIs, it’s important to make sure that they are lubricated, or that you’re using them with lubricant. An unlubricated condom can cause irritation in the vagina during sex, putting you at risk for getting a UTI. To be very clear, we are not encouraging you to skip the condom, as it’s the only type of birth control that can prevent and STI. Just make sure it’s lubricated in one way or the other.

#4. You use a spermicidal lubricant.

As we mentioned in our last point, if you use a condom, you need to make sure it’s lubricated, but it’s also important to note that not all lubricant is made equal — at least when it comes to UTIs. The pH in the vagina is dependent on a careful balance of bacteria, and unfortunately, studies have shown that spermicide can kill the good bacteria, putting you at a higher risk for getting a UTI.

As you can see, there are so many things that can cause UTIs, and many of them are really surprising.
