Do you find yourself putting off visiting the gynecologist because it makes you so uncomfortable?

If so, you’ve come to the right place. We are University Park Obstetrics and Gynecology, and we’re proud to be your go-to OB/GYN near you in Bradenton. We’re dedicated to ensuring that you’re as comfortable as possible when you come in for a visit of any kind, and that’s why, in our last blog, we went over a few tips to help make your next visit to the gynecologist as easy as possible. Keep reading for more helpful tips.

#5. Be Pap-smear ready.

Pap smears are arguably the most important aspect of your visit with your gynecologist, but they can also be the most uncomfortable aspect as well. Avoid getting a false result or having to retake a Pap smear by being properly prepared. Abstain from intercourse, vaginal medicines, douching and spermicidal jellies, creams or foams for the two days leading up to your appointment because these things can obscure or wash away abnormal cells the test is designed to pick up on. Also, try to avoid scheduling a Pap smear during your period.

#6. Tell your doctor about your fears and concerns.

Are you nervous or anxious about your visit with the gynecologist? If so, you should know that you’re not alone; many women feel this way. The last thing you’ll want to do is close yourself off during your appointment. You’ll be uncomfortable, and chances are, you won’t get all of your questions answered. Don’t be afraid to bring up your fears and concerns with your doctor. They can help you through them, and they can take steps to make your appointment more comfortable for you.

#7. Take an over-the-counter painkiller ahead of time.

Pelvic exams aren’t fun for anyone, but if you’re particularly sensitive, and you’re worried about the discomfort during your exam and Pap smear, you can always take an over-the-counter pain pill before your appointment.

#8. Talk about the tough subjects right off the bat.

If you’re one of the 30 percent of women who are too embarrassed to ask their doctor about sexual-health issues, it’s in your best interest to bite the bullet and bring up those issues at the onset of your appointment. There’s no rule that says that you need to wait until the end of your appointment to ask your doctor about more your embarrassing concerns, and if you do wait, you may end up talking yourself out of asking or running out of time. Studies show that patients feel more positively about their gynecological visits when they bring their biggest concerns up right away.
