Have you started menopause? Are you seeing it in your near future? Are you reaching the end of it? No matter where you stand relative to this intense physical change, the more you know about what is going on, the easier it is going to be. Hundreds of thousands of women have gone through menopause before you, and many of them didn’t have the advantages we do today, like hormone therapy and the MonaLisa Touch. We’ll talk about the MonaLisa Touch and what it can do later, but right now, we want to discuss some of the lesser-known symptoms of menopause.
When women experience the following symptoms, they tend to wonder if something is wrong with them, when in fact many women also experience these symptoms; they just aren’t broadcast as often.
Symptom 1: Restless Legs and/or Leg Cramps
Are you ever lying in bed, trying to go to sleep, and suddenly your legs tense involuntarily? Do they go into full spasms? This can make it extremely difficult to sleep or even sit at work. If you’re struggling with these symptoms, there are things that can be done. Generally, leg spasms happen due to a lack of magnesium. Magnesium is extremely important during menopause, so if you’re experiencing restless or cramping legs, invest in some extra magnesium. You can use capsules, skin spray, and dissolving tablets. The dissolving tablets are especially effective at quickly addressing symptoms, so it can be a good idea to keep some beside your bed.
Symptom 2: Acne or Spots
A surprising number of women end up struggling with acne and spots, something they hadn’t expected to deal with after puberty. Most know that their skin troubles are a result of hormone changes, but not everyone knows that testosterone is to blame. All women naturally have some testosterone, but when menopause hits and oestrogen and progesterone plummet, the imbalance can trigger acne.
While hormones are often to blame, it’s also important to realize that women’s livers can be very stressed during menopause. Stressed livers cause skin spots and other issues. We recommend you evaluate your overall lifestyle. How are you treating your liver? Are you drinking enough water?
Symptom 3: Cold Flashes
In our brains, there’s a gland called the hypothalamus, and one of the things it regulates is body temperature. Hormone changes mess it up, which results in your heating system firing up at all the wrong times. As a result, you heat up and sometimes get very cold. Some women will get both hot and cold flushes. The hot flush sends a bunch of blood to the surface of their skin, causing them to sweat a lot. The sweat then chills these women off fast and too much, leaving them shivering. Usually, they will warm back up eventually. If you don’t warm up and start to feel like you’ll be cold no matter what you do, your thyroid is probably messing things up. It’s common for the thyroid to slow down during menopause, so it’s a good idea to get in touch with your doctor to see what is going on.
Symptom 4: Rising Cholesterol
Cholesterol rises for many different reasons, including just getting older. It can also be your diet, your stress, inherited factors, and beyond. However, we are starting to find connections between cholesterol and menopause. How does this work?
Cholesterol is a building block for hormones, and when menopause hits and your hormone levels drastically change, your body may start to produce more cholesterol in order to bring hormone levels back up. This is a good consideration for your doctor to make if you find your cholesterol is going up. We definitely don’t recommend tossing any cholesterol medications you might be taking – remember, cholesterol can rise as a result of factors beyond menopause.
Symptom 5: Returning Health Issues
Along with acne, old health problems can show back up when menopause takes hold. Even old injuries can come back. We aren’t sure why this happens, but go ahead and treat the issues head-on; don’t dismiss them as a side-effect of menopause. You are already going through enough without dealing with old issues!
